How To Capitalize On The Holiday Hustle And Bustle: Optimizing Your Website For "Near Me" Searches

‘Tis the season for many businesses to enjoy increased revenues!

With consumers spending on gifts for the different holidays in November and December, it’s time for your business to take advantage. One way is to make sure customers in your city or area can find you when they’re ready to shop.

Here’s how to make the most of the holiday season by optimizing your website for "near me" searches.

What’s A “Near Me” Search?

This type of query means that a consumer is looking for something near them—right here, right now. One example is when you need a gas station and you’re in an area that’s unfamiliar. A Google search might include keywords like:

  • near me

  • closest

  • open

  • nearby

These searches are related to your location as well as what you need—what you’re searching for—and are typically done on a mobile device. They’re also done by voice search. In the example of the gas station, you might be driving while you make the request on your phone.

What does a near me search mean for your business? By optimizing your content for those types of searches, you can increase the chance that Google shows your business at the top of its results the next time someone “near you” asks that question.

Here’s how.

1. Optimize Your Google My Business Profile

We’ve already discussed the importance of a Google My Business profile. Now you need to make sure you optimize it so that your business climbs to the top of “near me” searches.

A few tips:

  • Use your complete business name and business address.

  • Use Google Maps to add the directions to your business address.

  • Categorize your business correctly and be as specific as possible.

  • Add photos of your business’ products and/or services.

  • Ask people to leave reviews on your business page.

2. Keep Your NAP Consistent

Your NAP—name, address, phone number—must be consistent on all your business profiles. This includes your Google My Business profile as well as your website and all social media sites.

Make sure your opening hours are also consistent, including updates during the holiday season. Even if you don’t make changes, regularly confirm that your hours are listed correctly.

3. Write Great Local Content

Your web presence should include content about your products, your business and even your location, and add links where relevant. Think about your website’s content—which can be written, audio or video content—that will attract the attention of customers, or help them solve a problem. Don’t forget about social media content too.
